It’s crazy to think that several years ago plus size women struggled to find clothing in their size, let alone fashionable, sexy, classy affordable items. These days an exciting new brand pops up or extends their range fairly regularly, and plus size fashion never looked so good.
“Monroe Knows is inspired by the iconic figure that represents confidence, courage and style. We believe every woman deserves to embody these qualities, and our aim is to provide beautiful dresses that will encourage women with curves to embrace their individual Confidence, Courage and Style.
Monroe Knows concept and vision is born in London. Creating simply stunning dresses sized 18 to 26, extending the range to 16 to 32 in 2015. Where Monroe Knows differs from the main high street and other online retailers is that it listens to the curvy women actually wearing the dresses. Giving them what they want AND what they need in a dress.
Monroe Knows is an Exclusive Online Boutique in Plus Size Fashion, aiming to buck the trend and offer Limited Edition ranges in addition to our Signature Collection. This allows us to focus on other new designs, fabrics and patterns for the long-term benefit of its loyal customers providing more freedom and choice with timeless pieces to suit every shape, size and style.
We’re very confident we have a style and colour to suit your needs. If not, we want to hear from you. We don’t want you to ever have to wear something old or something that you have been seen in a million times. Why not treat yourself. You deserve it!”
I was contacted by the extremely lovely Marvin from the company, who offered me the chance to try one of the dresses. Without hesitating, I made my decision – the Amber dress in black from Monroe Knows definitely had ‘George’ written all over it!
Figure hugging, stretchy, sleeved, knee length with a plunging neckline, is there a more perfect dress?!
You can tell that I am a bad blogger/dress enthusiast, as the second I opened the parcel and saw the gorgeous ribbon tied box I plunged straught in, devouring the vegan chocolate treat within and trying the dress straight on! I later remembered to take photos…oops!
As I have lost a bit of weight lately I ideally would have wanted a 14/16 in this dress – I am mentioning this for sizing references! However, Monroe Knows currently start at an 18 and so an 18 is what I went for.
The dress did come up a little big on me, particularly across my waist and stomach. It was slightly shallow on the boobs, but nothing that looked too tight or low, it just meant that the seam sat ever so slightly on my bust. I knew exactly how to fix all of these small ‘problems’, and I delved into my belt box and retrieved an old gem from H&M. Robbie (bribed by Chinese food) and I then made out way to Richmond Bridge in the rain to snap a few shots of the dress in action.
As well as the H&M belt, I teamed the dress with some M&S high heels, a Freya Deco and of course, some Maidenform high waisted shorts that I nabbed from TK Maxx.
The neckline features a very shallow crossover. Thanks to the stretchy material it can be hitched up slightly to provide more bust coverage if needed. I would say that you could wear this off the shoulders if needed without it looking strained, and the neckline is slightly scooped at that back. I adore the ruching in the body of the dress, as it’s perfect for covering up a stomach that might still be a bit shy of fitted items. The sleeves are a glorious elbow length and not too tight, and on my 5’7 frame the dress sits just beyond my knees – but I could pull it down even more if I wanted.
It’s cliche but in my opinion every girl needs a black dress in her life, and this ticks so many of the perfect LBD boxes for me. The black heels and gold belt give it a sophisticated twist, but a different pop of colour and accessory pairing could turn it into a whole new look.
This dress is currently available in UK sizes 18-24 – be gentle, Monroe Knows are brand new and they do have plans to extend their sizes as stated above. I would say that the stretch in this dress means that you could probably size down at least a size and still get a great if not slightly snug fit.
How do you like the look of Monroe Knows? Will you be investing in a piece? What do you think of the rest of the range? Please do let me know as every bit of feedback will help this company grow and become even more amazing!
